Q: Do I need a referral to see a therapist?
A: Almost never. You can book directly with a cash-pay therapist, with in-network therapists on most plans, with your county's Medi-Cal mental health line, and even at Kaiser — which allows mental health self-referral by phone or online.¹ The two real exceptions: some HMO plans route specialty referrals through a medical group (one call to member services settles it), and psychological testing often wants a physician referral for insurance coverage.
Worked example: "I need to see my doctor first" costs many people 3–6 weeks. The actual first step — emailing a therapist directly — takes four minutes tonight.
Do this: skip the permission-seeking and use the 5-day search method →. If your plan claims a referral is required, ask them to cite the plan document.
