Q: What is an associate therapist?
A: An associate (AMFT, ACSW, or APCC) is post-degree, pre-license: they've finished their master's and are accruing the 3,000 supervised hours California requires for full licensure. Often excellent, usually far more affordable — commonly $50–120 per session versus $150–250 for licensed clinicians. Every associate case is reviewed with a licensed supervisor, so you effectively get two clinical perspectives for less money.
Worked example: weekly sessions for a year: licensed therapist at $180 = $9,360. Associate at $80 = $4,160. Savings: $5,200.
Do this: ask any associate one question up front: "What happens to my fee and my slot when you get licensed?" Then filter for associates in the directory → — license status is shown on every profile.
