You have Medi-Cal, and someone told you it "doesn't really cover therapy." That someone was wrong. Medi-Cal covers individual therapy, and your copay is $0.¹

What's true: there are two doors, and people get bounced between them until they give up. Since 2022, a state policy called No Wrong Door says they can't do that anymore — whichever door you knock on has to get you to the right one with a warm handoff, not a shrug.²

The two doors, in one minute

Door 1 — your managed care plan (the card in your wallet: L.A. Care, Health Net, Molina, Anthem, Kaiser, CalOptima, IEHP, and so on). This door is for what the state calls mild-to-moderate needs: anxiety, depression, grief, stress that's hurting your life but not shutting it down. Call the member services number on your card and say:

"I'm requesting outpatient mental health services. I'd like a list of therapists taking new patients, and an appointment within 10 business days per the timely access law."

Yes — the 10-business-day rule applies to Medi-Cal managed care too.³

Door 2 — your county mental health plan. This door is for specialty care: needs that significantly affect your ability to function, or that involve more intensive support. You can call your county access line directly — no referral needed. Every county guide below has the number.

You don't have to guess which door is yours. Call either. Under No Wrong Door, if you belong at the other one, they must assess you and connect you — you can't be told "not us, goodbye."²

What Medi-Cal therapy costs

Nothing. No copay, no deductible, no bill for covered outpatient mental health.¹ If you get a bill, that's an error — call your plan and say "balance billing a Medi-Cal member is prohibited."

What happens next

You call → they screen you (10–20 minutes of questions, on the phone) → you're matched to a therapist or clinic → first appointment.
