The version of you that's barely holding it together between classes deserves the services your tuition already bought.
Every UC, CSU, and most community colleges run counseling centers your fees prepaid — and when campus waitlists bite (they do, mid-semester especially), California gives you more routes than most students realize. Three pieces.
The tool: the route by situation
Start at CAPS (counseling & psychological services — the name varies): free or nearly free, walk-in triage at most campuses, no parental involvement. Ask one question at intake: "What's the session limit, and what happens after it?" — many campuses cap at 6–12 sessions then refer out. When campus is full or capped: if you're on a parent's insurance, you can see any in-network therapist — the 10-day rule → applies; note that an EOB (explanation of benefits) may go to the policyholder, so if privacy from parents matters, ask your campus about confidential communications requests — California law lets you redirect insurance correspondence.¹ On your own or low income: Medi-Cal covers students at $0 → (financial aid doesn't block it), and associates run $50–120 →. Studying far from home? Telehealth works statewide →.
The inventory
[N_STUDENTS] verified California therapists list young-adult and student work — [N_STUDENTS_TELE] via telehealth, [N_STUDENTS_SLIDING] with sliding-scale openings under $100. Filter →
The question with a real answer
Q: Can I do therapy without my parents finding out, if I'm on their insurance? A: If you're 18+, your records are confidential — but billing paperwork can reach the policyholder. California's confidential communications law (SB 138) lets you require the plan to send communications directly to you.¹ Ask your insurer for a "confidential communications request." Or sidestep entirely: campus counseling and cash-pay sliding scale generate no insurance paperwork at all.
